Honda Announces New Passenger Front Airbag Design to Reduce Traffic Injuries and Fatalities in Wider Variety of Frontal Collisions

  • New airbag development led by U.S. engineers at Honda R&D center in Ohio

Honda today announced the development of an innovative new passenger front airbag technology designed to better protect occupants in a wide range of frontal collision scenarios, including angled crashes between vehicles or a vehicle and another object. Honda plans to begin applying its advanced airbag design to new products in the United States in 2020.

Development and testing of the new airbag was led by engineers at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. in Ohio in partnership with Autoliv, one of the company’s safety systems suppliers. The new design is based on Honda’s commitment to developing technologies that better protect vehicle occupants in a wide range of crash scenarios. In 2017, upwards of 37,000 people lost their lives on U.S. roadways as a result of motor vehicle traffic crashes, a slight decrease from the previous two years, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“This new airbag technology represents Honda’s continuing effort to advance safety performance in a wider variety of crash scenarios and reflects the innovative thinking that our engineers are bringing to the challenge of reducing traffic injuries and fatalities,” said Jim Keller, President of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. “Guided by Honda’s ‘Safety for Everyone’ commitment, our engineers recognize that their work on this type of breakthrough safety technology will have  far-reaching effects on peoples’ lives for many years to come.”

New Airbag Design

Honda’s next-generation airbag is designed to reduce the potential for injuries that can occur in a wider variety of frontal impacts. It is particularly beneficial in angled frontal impacts in which lateral collision forces can cause an occupant’s head to rotate severely or slide off the airbag, increasing the chance of serious injury.

Unlike conventional airbag systems that rely on a single inflatable compartment, the new system utilizes four major components: three inflated compartments — a center chamber and two outward-projecting side chambers that create a wide base across the dash — along with a “sail panel” that stretches between the two side chambers at their outermost edge. Operating something like a baseball catcher’s mitt, the sail panel catches and decelerates the occupant’s head while also engaging the side chambers, pulling them inward to cradle and protect the head, mitigating the potential for injury.

This next-generation airbag technology is the result of Honda engineers’ study of real-world crash events along with research and testing conducted at the company’s advanced safety research center in Raymond, Ohio. Honda’s Ohio safety center is one the most sophisticated facilities for safety research, development and testing in the world and includes facilities dedicated to advanced crash simulations, pedestrian safety, collision testing and advanced restraint system development and tuning.

Honda also is working to develop and deploy advanced passive safety and active safety systems that can reduce the severity of a collision or help avoid it entirely. In addition to passive safety systems such as airbags, seatbelts and advanced crash safety structures like the company’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, Honda is aggressively deploying its Honda Sensing® and AcuraWatch™ suites of safety and driver-assistive systems. Today, more than 2.5 million vehicles on U.S. roadways are utilizing these technologies, which are now standard or available on all 2019 and newer Honda models and standard on all 2019 and newer Acura sedans and SUVs.  The company has committed to making this broad suite of technologies standard on nearly all of its vehicles by 2022.

Honda Begins Final Phase of Takata Non-desiccated Airbag Inflator Recall Six Months Ahead of NHTSA Schedule

  • Phase 5 to occur ahead of NHTSA schedule due to significant Acura and Honda repair progress on existing recalls and adequate replacement parts supplies to repair all affected models
  • Prior to this expansion, Honda’s overall Takata inflator recall completion rate was 83.0%, including yearly scheduled recall expansions since May 2016
  • Since Phase 5 primarily includes Takata non-desiccated replacement inflators used in early recall repairs, the total number of recalled Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S. does not change significantly with this action

In the fifth and final phase of planned recalls announced by NHTSA in May 2016, Honda will conduct recalls covering approximately 1.6 million Honda and Acura automobiles in the United States to replace, for free, Takata replacement front airbag inflators that do not contain a moisture absorbing desiccant. With this final action, taken six months ahead of NHTSA’s schedule, Honda has now recalled all Takata non-desiccated airbag inflators installed in Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States.

The inflators included in Phase 5 were used as replacement parts during early Takata airbag inflator recall repairs or were part of whole airbag modules replaced for other reasons prior to February 2017. Excluding vehicles subject to the earlier Takata driver airbag inflator recalls, only 59 additional Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S. will become subject to a Takata airbag inflator recall for the first time because of this action.

Honda decided to take this action early, ahead of NHTSA’s planned expansion date in late December 2019, because it has made significant progress with existing recall repairs (83.0% completion rate as of 6/7/2019). The company also has adequate replacement parts, all from alternative suppliers, to repair all affected Acura and Honda models, including those in the expanded population. Thus, owners of affected vehicles should seek repair immediately at authorized Honda and Acura dealers.

In addition, all Honda Gold Wing motorcycles equipped with defective inflators in the U.S. were included in earlier recalls and remain eligible for repair. There have been no Takata airbag inflator ruptures involving Honda motorcycles globally. Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to schedule repair at an authorized dealer as soon as possible. Replacement parts are available, all from alternate suppliers, to begin free recall repairs immediately, and a free rental car is available to the vehicle owner for the day of the recall repair or longer if a replacement part is temporarily unavailable. Mailed notification to owners of recalled vehicles will begin in mid-August 2019. Automobile owners may also check their vehicles’ recall status now at www.recalls.acura.com and www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138. Motorcycle customers can check recall status at www.powersports.honda.com/recalls or they can call (866) 784-1870 for Honda motorcycle recall information.

Since this recall primarily involves replacement inflators installed in vehicles previously subject to recall, the total number of Honda and Acura vehicles affected by Takata recalls does not change significantly with this action. Honda Begins Final Phase of Takata Non-desiccated Airbag Inflator Recall Six Months Ahead of NHTSA Schedule

  • Phase 5 to occur ahead of NHTSA schedule due to significant Acura and Honda repair progress on existing recalls and adequate replacement parts supplies to repair all affected models
  • Prior to this expansion, Honda’s overall Takata inflator recall completion rate was 83.0%, including yearly scheduled recall expansions since May 2016
  • Since Phase 5 primarily includes Takata non-desiccated replacement inflators used in early recall repairs, the total number of recalled Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S. does not change significantly with this action

In the fifth and final phase of planned recalls announced by NHTSA in May 2016, Honda will conduct recalls covering approximately 1.6 million Honda and Acura automobiles in the United States to replace, for free, Takata replacement front airbag inflators that do not contain a moisture absorbing desiccant. With this final action, taken six months ahead of NHTSA’s schedule, Honda has now recalled all Takata non-desiccated airbag inflators installed in Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States.

The inflators included in Phase 5 were used as replacement parts during early Takata airbag inflator recall repairs or were part of whole airbag modules replaced for other reasons prior to February 2017. Excluding vehicles subject to the earlier Takata driver airbag inflator recalls, only 59 additional Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S. will become subject to a Takata airbag inflator recall for the first time because of this action.

Honda decided to take this action early, ahead of NHTSA’s planned expansion date in late December 2019, because it has made significant progress with existing recall repairs (83.0% completion rate as of 6/7/2019). The company also has adequate replacement parts, all from alternative suppliers, to repair all affected Acura and Honda models, including those in the expanded population. Thus, owners of affected vehicles should seek repair immediately at authorized Honda and Acura dealers.

In addition, all Honda Gold Wing motorcycles equipped with defective inflators in the U.S. were included in earlier recalls and remain eligible for repair. There have been no Takata airbag inflator ruptures involving Honda motorcycles globally. Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to schedule repair at an authorized dealer as soon as possible. Replacement parts are available, all from alternate suppliers, to begin free recall repairs immediately, and a free rental car is available to the vehicle owner for the day of the recall repair or longer if a replacement part is temporarily unavailable. Mailed notification to owners of recalled vehicles will begin in mid-August 2019. Since this recall primarily involves replacement inflators installed in vehicles previously subject to recall, the total number of Honda and Acura vehicles affected by Takata recalls does not change significantly with this action. 2019 Honda Passport Achieves Top NHTSA Overall Safety Rating

The all-new 2019 Honda Passport achieved a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score, the highest available overall safety rating issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as part of its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). With this result, every tested 2019 Honda vehicle has earned an NCAP 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the NHTSA1.

The Passport and other Honda models’ crashworthiness is enabled in part by the latest generation of Honda’s proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, a network of front-frame structures designed to absorb and deflect the energy from a frontal collision.

Beyond crashworthiness, the Honda Sensing® suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies is now standard equipment on the 2019 Passport, Accord, Civic2, Clarity series, Insight, and Pilot and available on every Honda nameplate. Since its introduction on the 2015 CR-V, Honda has sold over 2.1 million vehicles equipped with Honda Sensing® and nearly 85 percent of all new Honda vehicles sold in 2019 are equipped with Honda Sensing®.

Honda Encourages Teens to Have #TheTextTalk with Parents, Cultivating Open Dialogue on Distracted Driving

  • Study1 shows one in three parents text and drive with children in the car

Given the pervasive danger of texting while driving, Honda is flipping the script by encouraging teens to be role models and have #TheTextTalk with their parents throughout the month of April and beyond. The Distracted Driving Awareness Month campaign from Honda features a series of videos geared to motivate teens to have #TheTextTalk, an open dialogue with their parents about practicing safer driving habits: Honda.us.distracted.

 

The campaign was inspired by today’s growing need to address the dangers of driving distracted. Researchers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing found that one in three parents read text messages and one in seven use social media while driving their children between the ages of four and ten. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, each day in the United States more than 1,000 people are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver.2

“By making children and teens the catalysts for change, Honda’s distracted driving campaign takes a nontraditional approach in parent-child dynamics to capture true human emotion and encourage safer driving,” said Jessica Fini, social media manager at American Honda Motor, Co., Inc. “For the past six years, we have used our social media platforms to promote safer driving during National Distracted Driving Awareness month, and we hope having the text talk will inspire a crucial conversation between teens and parents beyond the month of April.”

Distracted Driving Campaign Details
Honda’s distracted driving campaign features a long-form video (Honda.us.distracted) broken up into three pivotal parts:

  • Introduction: each video opens with a montage of teenagers sitting down for individual interviews, discussing their and their parents’ phone behavior.
  • Revelation: the video then shows the director asking each teen a series of questions related to their parent’s driving habits. The director asks why they haven’t discussed the dangers of their parents texting while driving, and how they’d feel if they had the talk with them now.
  • Change: the families reunite to have #TheTextTalk. Each emotional parent-child conversation ends with a heartfelt commitment from the parent to stop texting while driving.
  • The long-form video will live on Honda’s YouTube channel with cut-down versions of the video featured on Honda’s social media channels, including Twitter (@Honda), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Honda/), and Instagram (@Honda), throughout the month of April.

The campaign also features a pledge to drive distracted-free:

  • The families featured in the video sign a pledge, a physical reminder of their heartfelt discussion, on how they will stop driving while distracted for the sake of their loved ones.
  • The pledge will also be featured on Honda’s Instagram and website. Honda is encouraging people to share the pledge by tagging their loved ones on social media.
  • Alternatively, a link to the online PDF version of the pledge is available at Honda.us.pledge and can be printed, signed, and shared among friends and family as a physical reminder of their commitment to no longer text and drive.

Honda “Crashes” New York International Auto Show with 2019 Honda HR-V

The New York International Auto Show draws more than 1 million consumers each year to see the hundreds of bright, shiny vehicles. For the first time at an auto show, Honda will display a refreshed 2019 HR-V that recently was safety crash tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The emotional display of the HR-V showcases what a vehicle endures in a crash (and what it looks like after), including the structural strength and airbag deployment, highlighting the progression of safety technology. The HR-V exhibits safety rating leadership at an affordable price, starting at $20,520.

“Safety performance is an important factor in the purchase decision of most car buyers regardless of vehicle size or price, and we wanted to display how well our entry SUV, the Honda HR-V, performed in one of the most stringent collision tests in the world,” said Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior vice president of Automobile Sales at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and general manager of the Honda Division. “By having a crashed HR-V on display at the New York Auto Show, media and consumers will be able to see first-hand how the HR-V performed in the IIHS test, with dramatic, real-world visuals to showcase our safety rating leadership and our commitment to Safety for Everyone.”

The affordable 2019 HR-V subcompact crossover, equipped with Honda’s proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, has earned the highest available rating of “Good” in all six IIHS crashworthiness tests, and has been named an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK when equipped with Honda Sensing® technology and certain headlights. ACE™ body structure absorbs the violent forces of a crash, reducing the likelihood of injury to vehicle occupants. All 2019 HR-V models achieve “Good” ratings for driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength, and head restraints and seats, along with a “Superior” rating for front crash prevention when equipped with available Honda Sensing®.

The HR-V on display was safety crash tested in the IIHS driver-side small overlap front test. This test is designed to replicate what happens when the front left corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole. This crash test is a challenge for some safety belt and airbag designs because occupants move both forward and toward the side of the vehicle. During this test, the HR-V traveled at 40 mph toward a 5-foot-tall rigid barrier.

Honda has seven 2019 model-year vehicles — Insight, Accord1, HR-V2, CR-V2, Pilot2, Odyssey2 and Ridgeline2 – that earned a TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from IIHS. Further, all 2019 model-year Honda vehicles that have been fully tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) have earned a top 5-star Overall Vehicle Score, 11 models in total.
