Road Car vs. Race Car: Acura Pits NSX Supercar Against Racing Counterpart, the NSX GT3 Evo

A new video from Acura explores the relationship between the Acura NSX supercar and its race-winning counterpart, the NSX GT3 Evo. Currently #1 in the IMSA GT Daytona (GTD) point standings, NSX GT3 Evo driver Trent Hindman of Meyer Shank Racing demonstrates the distinctive approaches to performance of the two cars in 0-60 runs, braking tests, ease-of-use evaluations and, of course, ultimate lap times at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The production NSX showcases its strengths as a supercar designed to run with the world’s best exotics, while the NSX GT3 Evo demonstrates its chops as a purpose-built, razor-sharp race machine. Hindman’s conclusion: the NSX was born to be made into a brilliant race car.

 

Born to Race
One glance tells you the production NSX and NSX GT3 have much in common. After all, GT competition standards require race cars to maintain much of the same exterior character of their production counterparts. But the similarities are much more than skin deep. In fact, while the two are actually uniquely skinned – the production model with aluminum and composite panels, the GT3 dressed predominantly in exposed carbon fiber – they share more than 80-percent of their underlying component parts, reflecting the fact that racing was an essential part of the plan from the earliest stages of the NSX development.

“We knew from the outset that the second generation NSX would be tested at the highest limits on track,” said Ted Klaus, who served as global development leader for the second generation NSX and was recently named president of Honda Performance Development, the North American race engineering arm of Acura Motorsports. “Competitive racing was an essential consideration during NSX development, which influenced critical decisions we made regarding the car’s fundamental design.”

A Foundation for Speed 
The largest and most foundational shared component is the NSX’s ultra-rigid, lightweight, aluminum-intensive space frame, which the GT3 uses in competition without significant modification. In designing the NSX body structure, engineers were keenly aware that exceptional rigidity was essential to the performance of NSX, enabling its sharp and immediate responses to driver inputs and amplifying the capacities of its hybrid power unit and electric torque vectoring system.

The NSX and NSX GT3 Evo space frames are constructed at Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio1. The PMC is the first plant in the automotive world to utilize 100-percent robotic MIG welding for body construction. In this unique approach, eight high-precision robots are used in concert with specially designed rotisserie-style jigs to apply 860 MIG welds with incredible precision. The PMC also monitors quality variances in the space frame’s tolerance down to the width of a human hair.

A Tale of Two Power Units
A next generation supercar is worthy of a next generation powertrain. The NSX road car combines a bespoke 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 and world’s only 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) with a three motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® system, working in concert to produce 5732 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. Unlike other hybrid supercars, not only is electric power used to fill the “torque well” of a turbocharged engine, the NSX’s front-mounted Twin Motor Unit (TMU) is capable of delivering both positive and negative torque independently to the front wheels. In this respect, the production NSX stands alone in the universe of supercars past and present: the only exotic using electric motors to enhance every element of dynamic performance – acceleration, braking and cornering.

By contrast, the NSX GT3 Evo, in keeping with the rear-drive-only requirement of GT3 competition, eschews the production model’s hybrid componentry, relying solely on a lightly modified version of the production model’s 3.5-liter twin turbocharged V6 engine. Like the NSX body, the NSX’s bespoke engine was designed from the outset to support racing applications, and the GT3 engine is remarkably similar to its street-able counterpart, using the same design specifications as the engine in the production NSX, including the block, heads, valvetrain, crankshaft, pistons and dry-sump lubrication system. The race engine is paired with a six-speed, sequential-shift racing gearbox, delivering power to the rear wheels. Both the NSX road and race engines are meticulously hand assembled by a small group of master technicians in a purpose-built facility at the company’s engine manufacturing plant in Anna, Ohio.

NSX GT3 Winning Globally
Since its debut in early 2017, the NSX GT3 and GT3 Evo have tackled some of the world’s most iconic GT races, including the 24 Hours of Daytona and Spa; the 12 Hours of Sebring; Petit Le Mans; and the FIA GT World Cup in Macau. Currently, the NSX GT3 Evos campaigned by Meyer Shank Racing in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship lead the points for both Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ Championships in the GTD class. In the Blancpain GT World Challenge America series, the NSX GT3 Evo has earned six pro-am wins with three different teams (3-Racers Edge, 2-RealTime Racing, 1-Gradient Racing). Around the world, the NSX GT3 Evo driven by Autobacs Racing Team (ARTA) leads the GT300 class in the Japanese Super GT series with two podium finishes. Additionally, the NSX GT3 Evo has competed in the Blancpain GT Series Asia, China GT Championship, select events in the Intercontinental GT Challenge, the Blancpain GT Sports Club and GT Series in Europe, and the ADAC GT Masters in Germany.

About Trent Hindman
At 23 years old, Trent Hindman has already enjoyed an enviable racing career. Beginning at age eight racing karts at a local and regional level, the New Jersey native eventually developed into a national karting champion by 2008. In 2010, he made the transition into racing formula cars, ultimately becoming a recipient of the Team USA Scholarship in 2011, followed by a top-five run in the 2012 USF2000 championship. From there, Hindman graduated to sports car racing, and in 2014 became the youngest driver to win a Michelin Pilot Challenge championship at just 19 years old. Hindman joined Meyer Shank Racing for three races in 2018, driving the NSX GT3 to second-place finishes at Daytona and Petit Le Mans. This year, Hindman and co-driver Mario Farnbacher currently lead the IMSA GTD driver’s championship, fresh off a recent victory at Watkins Glen.

Acura NSX Named a Best Performing Car by The Car Connection for 2019

Acura NSX GT3 Evo Teams Earn Pro/Am Wins In Virgini

  • Kyle Marcelli, Martin Barkey score second Blancpain GT World Challenge win of the season

Acura powered a pair of NSX GT3 Evo’s to Victory Lane at Virginia International Raceway this weekend, as Racer’s Edge Motorsports and RealTime Racing each earned Pro/Am class wins in Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2019 Blancpain GT World Challenge America.

The Racer’s Edge Acura NSX of Kyle Marcelli and Martin Barkey followed up on a successful opening weekend with a strong performance in Saturday’s opening event, storming to their second win of the year in the hotly-contest ProAm class.

In Sunday’s nightcap, Dane Cameron and Bret Curtis rolled to their first win of the 2019 season, taking the RealTime Racing NSX GT3 Evo to the checkers.

The Racer’s Edge squad recovered from early-race contact in Saturday’s race and fought through the Pro/Am field. Once in the lead, closing driver Marcelli held off the Gradient Racing Acura of Ryan Eversley on a late restart to earn the win.

Eversley and Till Bectholsheimer held on for second on Saturday, and followed that with a fourth-place run on Sunday.

Sunday showed the strength of the RealTime squad, led by SCCA-? Hall-of-Famer Peter Cunningham. The team was making its 2019 debut in the World Challenge series, and despite having nearly no track time with car before the weekend, RealTime stormed to a dominating win on Sunday.

Cameron made a strong move off the starting line to vault his Acura NSX GT3 Evo into third place overall and first in the Pro/Am class, and spent the duration of his stint building his lead. Bret Curtis took over and protected the lead well, finishing with a 20-second gap over second place.

The series will next compete in three weeks, going north of the border to run at venerable Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada May 17-19.

Acura NSX Establishes Production Car Record at Iconic Long Beach Street Circuit

  • New lap record of 1:35.663 set for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach circuit
  • Record set in a production 2019 NSX driven by the legendary Peter Cunningham

Leading up to the 45th running of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, the iconic race’s new title sponsor has established a production car record around the 1.968 mile historic street circuit in the 2019 Acura NSX.

 

In the capable hands of SCCA Hall-of-Famer and long-time Acura racing partner, Peter Cunningham, the 2019 NSX established a new production car lap record of 1:35.663. The record setting run was made with an unmodified NSX, fitted with road-legal tires.

The 2019 NSX will also serve as the official Pace Car for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. Race action includes a run for the checkered flag by Acura Team Penske, fielding a pair of ARX-05 Daytona Prototypes driven by Helio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya along with Ricky Taylor and Dane Cameron co-driving, respectively, in the BUBBA Burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach on Saturday. Acura will also join the field in Sunday’s NTT IndyCar Series race with a car campaigned by Meyer Shank Racing and driven by Jack Harvey, marking the return of Acura colors to Indy Car racing for the first time since 1994.

Acura Marks 30 Years Since Debut of Iconic NSX Supercar

  • Acura revisits an iconic moment in its history: the unveiling of the original NS-X Concept

Acura this week marks 30 years since the shot heard ’round the automotive world — the 1989 global debut of the first-generation Acura NSX.  The first mid-engined exotic without European pedigree, NSX was a low slung, super light, high-revving machine sporting the world’s first all-aluminum monocoque, titanium connecting rods, a VTEC™ valvetrain and levels of quality and daily driving comfort unheard of in sports cars of the time.

Introduced as the NS-X Concept, the precursor to the production NSX, Acura chose the Chicago Auto Show for the global debut, at a press conference held at the Drake Hotel on February 9, 1989. In celebrating this milestone event, Acura returns to the Chicago Auto Show, hosting a panel discussion to reflect on the car’s origins, its impact on the automotive landscape, and the role the next-generation NSX is playing in the renaissance of Acura today.

 

Joining the panel discussion are Jon Ikeda, Vice President and General Manager of Acura, whose 28-year career at Acura was catalyzed by the launch of NSX, and Csaba Csere, former editor-in-chief of Car and Driver magazine, who attended the 1989 reveal and was among the first journalists to drive both the original and second-generation NSX.

Released in conjunction with the Chicago Auto Show, Acura has published a new video featuring throwback footage of a first model year (1991) production NSX, and a current (2019) NSX, along with never before seen images from the original NS-X Concept reveal.

Game Changer

Since its debut, NSX has made an indelible impression on the exotic and supercar world. Its all-aluminum construction and 270-horsepower VTEC V6 were as exotic as anything available at the time, but its conventionally comfortable and ergonomic cockpit and gentle road manners ran sharply counter to contemporary European exotics.

“Before NSX, it was always assumed that supercar performance came at the price of a comfortable interior and everyday drivability,” said Jon Ikeda. “NSX shattered those notions, and raised the bar on every other exotic and supercar maker, with the effects still felt today. NSX was a huge inspiration and one of the major reasons I was drawn to join Acura nearly 30 years ago.”

Like its predecessor, today’s second-generation NSX incorporates groundbreaking technology. The Acura NSX is the only supercar made in America and the only one utilizing electric motors to enhance every element of dynamic performance, seamlessly combining three-motor Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ with a bespoke twin-turbocharged, mid-mounted V6 engine to deliver an unparalleled range of driving experiences, from all-electric Quiet mode to the ultimate at-the-limit capability of Track mode.

Acura NSX: Did You Know?

Roots of NS-X

Honda R&D in Japan took the first steps toward what would become the first-generation NSX in January 1984 with basic research on a new drive system distinct from the “FF” (front-engine/front-wheel drive) vehicle type that had underpinned Honda’s success with such iconic models as Civic, Accord and the Acura Integra.

A year earlier, Honda had made its return to Formula 1 racing and its engineers were excited about the prospects of creating a sports car that would showcase the company’s deeply rooted racing spirit and high-performance design and engineering capabilities. Also, the R&D team had been contacted several times by the group at American Honda that was planning the launch of the Acura brand, indicating their interest in a pinnacle sports car for the new lineup.

The focus of the research was on an underfloor, midship-engine rear-wheel drive (UMR) format that could combine higher packaging efficiency along with the sport characteristics associated with rear drive. It was Honda’s first experience designing a passenger car with the engine in the rear half of the vehicle. In February 1984, the development team created a UMR test vehicle using a first-generation Honda City.

An Engine Roars, and Changes Follow

The prototype NS-X Concept introduced at the Drake Hotel in Chicago in February 1989 was shorter overall than the final production vehicle with a shorter wheelbase and less front and rear overhang. The evolution of the design from prototype to production would be impacted by a late change to the engine specification – from the prototype’s SOHC V6, shared with the Acura Legend sedan, to the production NSX’s bespoke DOHC V6 with VTEC valvetrain.

Prior to the press conference, the president of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., Tadashi Kume, unexpectedly decided to fire up the prototype’s engine, a sound that could be heard in an adjacent room, where a competing automaker was holding its own press preview. While the noisy blast attracted media attention, Kume turned to the NSX engineering team and asked why the NS-X Concept didn’t use the new VTEC technology that had been recently developed at R&D. When told that it was only planned for a 4-cylinder engine application, Kume pushed the team for a VTEC V6 design.

The engineering team received similar input from a group of top enthusiast automotive journalists attending a “super long lead” driving event at Honda’s Tochigi R&D Center, prior to the prototype’s Chicago Auto Show debut. These included top testers from Car and DriverMotor Trend and Road & Track. The reactions were generally very positive; however, there was also a feeling that the NSX could use more power.

Ultimately, the DOHC VTEC cylinder head was wider than the head on the prototype’s SOHC engine, with significant implications to the production NSX body. The wider engine resulted in a slightly longer wheelbase, along with increased front and rear overhang for the production NSX. All of these changes occurred rapidly, resulting in the longer production model.

Putting the NS-X Prototype to the Ultimate Test

New technology like the all-aluminum unibody and chassis and transverse V6 engine were critical to NSX’s capabilities, and challenged conventional wisdom of an exotic car. But key to the dynamic performance story was the human element, and one specific human in particular.

In the early stages of development, the R&D team spent an entire month at Honda’s Suzuka Circuit, where they conducted numerous evaluations with the test car. In February 1989, around the same time as the NS-X Concept model’s debut in Chicago, legendary F1 driver Ayrton Senna was in Japan to test the new Honda F1 car. The engineering team asked Senna if he would evaluate the NSX prototype. Even though the production NSX targeted levels of rigidity equaling Porsche and Ferrari, Senna felt it could be better.

“I’m not sure I can really give you appropriate advice on a mass-production car,” Senna told the team, “but I feel it’s a little fragile.”

Based on Senna’s input, the team raised its targets for rigidity in April, 1989. They chose the famed Nürburgring for testing, believing that the course would reveal problems they couldn’t detect in their testing at Suzuka. They knew that an extremely difficult course like the Nürburgring would expose even a slight delay in the vehicle’s response to driver inputs. Sure enough, the “Green Hell” exposed that the flexing body was taking away the desired feel of an immediate and direct connection between the car and driver.

By the end of the Nürburgring tests, and over eight months of continuous effort to improve the body design, engineers had increased the car’s rigidity by 50 percent.

From NS-X to NSX – Naming Acura’s New Supercar

The NS-X development name was one of several created by the R&D team in Japan to represent the prototype supercar. In the view of the development team, the naming concept for NS-X was “New,” “Sportscar” and “unknown world” – with “X” being the mathematical symbol for a variable, or an unknown value. A team at American Honda, selected NS-X from the list of possible names, but chose to express the definition as “New Sports eXperimental.”

That said, NS-X was not originally intended as the go-to-market model name. It was considered as the name for the prototype to be revealed in Chicago and then to be used in subsequent promotional appearances. But the incredible attention the NS-X received around the world created virtually unstoppable momentum for the name. So, a decision was made to remove the hyphen from NS-X leading to NSX as the official model name for Acura’s first supercar.

NSX Today: A Common Thread

With its multi-material space frame body, groundbreaking three-motor Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive™ system , today’s NSX pays homage to the groundbreaking nature of the original while exploring altogether new concepts in electrified supercar performance. Also, like the original, the next-gen NSX powertrain design evolved radically from its conceptual origins.

The Acura NSX Concept that debuted at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show showcased a naturally-aspirated 60-degree V6 mounted transverse behind the seats in a layout similar to the original NSX; however, in the middle of development, the global R&D team decided to take a more challenging path – the creation of an all-new twin-turbocharged longitudinally mounted 75-degree V6. And, similar to the move to a DOHC V6 in the original, the adoption of a new powertrain concept had wide-ranging effects on the body proportions, aerodynamics package and overall design.

“Changing the powertrain design and layout was NOT an easy task,” said Ted Klaus, NSX Global Development Leader. “Frankly, it was like undergoing a heart transplant while running a marathon. But 10 seconds behind the wheel, and you understand why this power unit is key to delivering a New Sports Experience.”

Despite the major powertrain change, the development team maintained the original schedule – revealing the production version of the second-generation NSX just three years later at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.

2019 Acura NSX Debuts in Monterey with Design Updates, Chassis Enhancements and Expanded Color Palette

The 2019 Acura NSX will make its debut at Monterey Car Week featuring new design cues, exterior and interior color combinations, and chassis upgrades that enhance vehicle dynamics. Design Updates, Expanded Color Palette

New for 2019, a striking Thermal Orange Pearl premium paint option continues the tradition of NSX color names inspired by motorsports venues and iconic corners, and pays homage to 30 years of Acura motorsports vehicles with orange accented liveries. Joining the Thermal Orange Pearl exterior, optional carbon ceramic metallic (CCM) brakes can now be fitted with orange calipers. New for 2019, the standard iron brakes can now be fitted with red calipers.

All 2019 NSX models are distinguished by a new body-color front grille garnish (previously silver) and high-gloss treatments for the front grille surround, front air intake mesh and rear bumper outlet mesh. High-gloss treatment is also applied to the available Carbon Fiber Decklid Spoiler and Carbon Fiber Exterior Package – including a front chin spoiler, side sill garnish and rear diffuser.

Inside the cockpit, the 2019 NSX color palette is expanded with the addition of an optional Indigo blue Semi-aniline leather and Alcantara® theme. The available semi-aniline full leather (non-Alcantara) power sport seats can now be optioned in Red in addition to Ebony. Power sport seats (4-way), previously a $1,500 option, are now standard equipment. Lightweight manually adjustable sport seats, wrapped in Black Milano leather and Alcantara, remain an available no-cost option. Satellite-Linked Navigation, ELS Studio® premium audio, front and rear proximity sensors and aluminum sport pedals, previously optional equipment, are now standard.

Dynamics Enhancements

For the 2019 model, engineers modified chassis components, tires and software tuning to make NSX even more responsive to the will of the driver, elevating performance driving in all circumstances, from daily driving to the circuit.  At the limit, the NSX’s balance, playfulness and controllability has improved, allowing the driver to more precisely modulate understeer and oversteer with subtle throttle inputs. The changes resulted in a nearly 2-second faster lap time in testing around the world famous Suzuka Circuit.

Chassis enhancements include larger front and rear stabilizer bars (increasing stiffness by 26 percent in front, 19 percent at the rear) and 21 percent stiffer rear toe link bushings. Rear hub rigidity has increased 6 percent. Software calibrations to the NSX’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® power unit, active magnetorheological dampers, electric power steering and VSA settings capitalize on this new hardware, as well as the grippier tire setup.

The 2019 NSX rides on new Continental SportContact™ 6 tires, developed exclusively for the NSX. The new tires (replacing Continental ContiSportContact™ 5P) feature a revised tread pattern, construction and rubber compound for improved handling performance in all conditions—from daily commuting to track use—including wet weather driving. The track-focused Pirelli P Zero™ Trofeo R remains an optional dealer-installed tire.

Electrifying Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® Power Unit

The 2019 NSX is powered by a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® power unit consisting of a twin-turbocharged mid‑mounted V6 engine paired with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (9DCT). An electric Direct Drive Motor integrated with the engine and 9DCT supplements the engine with instantaneous electric torque. Containing two additional electric motors, the front-mounted Twin Motor Unit (TMU) continuously varies torque—both positive and negative—to the left and right front wheels to enhance handling precision and cornering capabilities, elevating any driver’s confidence and performance. Maximum peak system output is 573 horsepower and 476 lb.-ft. of torque.

The NSX’s Integrated Dynamics System—with Quiet, Sport, Sport+ and Track modes—provides for a wider range of driving experiences than conventional supercars. The NSX features an advanced, multi-material body and aluminum-intensive space frame with the world’s first application of aluminum ablation casting in the space frame structure, enabling ultra-high rigidity, compact packaging and outstanding collision safety performance.

2019 Acura NSX Pricing and Feature Changes

Each NSX is crafted one-by-one at the Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohioi and continues the NSX tradition of offering an incredible performance value in the supercar market. The 2019 model starts at $157,500ii (an increase of $1,500 over the 2018 model) with $4,700 in previously optional content now standard (4-way power sport seats, Satellite-Linked Navigation, ELS Studio® premium audio, proximity sensors and aluminum sport pedals).

All new NSX owners have the opportunity to join the NSX Insider Experience, a personalized program that allows NSX owners to participate in the making of their bespoke supercar. The program offers a curated, one-on-one tour of key Acura facilities across Ohio, including the Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC), where the NSX is built, and the NSX engine assembly room at the Anna Engine Plant. Guests also have the opportunity to track an NSX, guided by a professional driver, on one of the primary proving grounds where it was developed and tuned – the Transportation Research Center (TRC).

Based on the NSX road car and utilizing its twin-turbocharged V6 powerplant and multi-material space frame, the NSX GT3 race car has already taken multiple poles, checkered flags and podiums, including consecutive wins on the streets of Belle Isle in Detroit (2017 and 2018). 2019 Acura NSX Debuts in Monterey with Design Updates, Chassis Enhancements and Expanded Color Palette

The 2019 Acura NSX will make its debut at Monterey Car Week featuring new design cues, exterior and interior color combinations, and chassis upgrades that enhance vehicle dynamics. Design Updates, Expanded Color Palette

New for 2019, a striking Thermal Orange Pearl premium paint option continues the tradition of NSX color names inspired by motorsports venues and iconic corners, and pays homage to 30 years of Acura motorsports vehicles with orange accented liveries. Joining the Thermal Orange Pearl exterior, optional carbon ceramic metallic (CCM) brakes can now be fitted with orange calipers. New for 2019, the standard iron brakes can now be fitted with red calipers.

All 2019 NSX models are distinguished by a new body-color front grille garnish (previously silver) and high-gloss treatments for the front grille surround, front air intake mesh and rear bumper outlet mesh. High-gloss treatment is also applied to the available Carbon Fiber Decklid Spoiler and Carbon Fiber Exterior Package – including a front chin spoiler, side sill garnish and rear diffuser.

Inside the cockpit, the 2019 NSX color palette is expanded with the addition of an optional Indigo blue Semi-aniline leather and Alcantara® theme. The available semi-aniline full leather (non-Alcantara) power sport seats can now be optioned in Red in addition to Ebony. Power sport seats (4-way), previously a $1,500 option, are now standard equipment. Lightweight manually adjustable sport seats, wrapped in Black Milano leather and Alcantara, remain an available no-cost option. Satellite-Linked Navigation, ELS Studio® premium audio, front and rear proximity sensors and aluminum sport pedals, previously optional equipment, are now standard.

Dynamics Enhancements

For the 2019 model, engineers modified chassis components, tires and software tuning to make NSX even more responsive to the will of the driver, elevating performance driving in all circumstances, from daily driving to the circuit.  At the limit, the NSX’s balance, playfulness and controllability has improved, allowing the driver to more precisely modulate understeer and oversteer with subtle throttle inputs. The changes resulted in a nearly 2-second faster lap time in testing around the world famous Suzuka Circuit.

Chassis enhancements include larger front and rear stabilizer bars (increasing stiffness by 26 percent in front, 19 percent at the rear) and 21 percent stiffer rear toe link bushings. Rear hub rigidity has increased 6 percent. Software calibrations to the NSX’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® power unit, active magnetorheological dampers, electric power steering and VSA settings capitalize on this new hardware, as well as the grippier tire setup.

The 2019 NSX rides on new Continental SportContact™ 6 tires, developed exclusively for the NSX. The new tires (replacing Continental ContiSportContact™ 5P) feature a revised tread pattern, construction and rubber compound for improved handling performance in all conditions—from daily commuting to track use—including wet weather driving. The track-focused Pirelli P Zero™ Trofeo R remains an optional dealer-installed tire.

Electrifying Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® Power Unit

The 2019 NSX is powered by a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® power unit consisting of a twin-turbocharged mid‑mounted V6 engine paired with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (9DCT). An electric Direct Drive Motor integrated with the engine and 9DCT supplements the engine with instantaneous electric torque. Containing two additional electric motors, the front-mounted Twin Motor Unit (TMU) continuously varies torque—both positive and negative—to the left and right front wheels to enhance handling precision and cornering capabilities, elevating any driver’s confidence and performance. Maximum peak system output is 573 horsepower and 476 lb.-ft. of torque.

The NSX’s Integrated Dynamics System—with Quiet, Sport, Sport+ and Track modes—provides for a wider range of driving experiences than conventional supercars. The NSX features an advanced, multi-material body and aluminum-intensive space frame with the world’s first application of aluminum ablation casting in the space frame structure, enabling ultra-high rigidity, compact packaging and outstanding collision safety performance.

2019 Acura NSX Pricing and Feature Changes

Each NSX is crafted one-by-one at the Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohioi and continues the NSX tradition of offering an incredible performance value in the supercar market. The 2019 model starts at $157,500ii (an increase of $1,500 over the 2018 model) with $4,700 in previously optional content now standard (4-way power sport seats, Satellite-Linked Navigation, ELS Studio® premium audio, proximity sensors and aluminum sport pedals).

Participate in the Making of Your Custom Supercar

All new NSX owners have the opportunity to join the NSX Insider Experience, a personalized program that allows NSX owners to participate in the making of their bespoke supercar. The program offers a curated, one-on-one tour of key Acura facilities across Ohio, including the Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC), where the NSX is built, and the NSX engine assembly room at the Anna Engine Plant. Guests also have the opportunity to track an NSX, guided by a professional driver, on one of the primary proving grounds where it was developed and tuned – the Transportation Research Center (TRC).

The NSX Insider Experience is offered in six distinct packages with one and two-day tour options, which can be customized to include a tour of the Anna Engine Plant in addition to the tour of the PMC. Additional options include a two or four-hour performance driving experience at the Acura Proving Grounds, as well as a tour of the Honda Heritage Center. Packages start at $2,700. NSX Motorsports Success

Based on the NSX road car and utilizing its twin-turbocharged V6 powerplant and multi-material space frame, the NSX GT3 race car has already taken multiple poles, checkered flags and podiums, including consecutive wins on the streets of Belle Isle in Detroit (2017 and 2018). Now in its sophomore season of the IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship, the NSX GT3 is currently in the running for the Manufacturer, Team (Meyer Shank Racing) and Driver Championship (Katherine Legge).
