Acura MDX Holds Strong with Highest Predicted Retention of Value

The 2016 Acura MDX has been awarded a Pre-Owned Value Award (POVA) from ALG – the industry benchmark for determining the future resale value – for having the highest predicted retention of value, from two to five years of age, of any model in the Premium Midsize Utility Three-Row category.

With nearly a million units sold since its inception, the MDX is America’s best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all-time1 and continues this year as the #1 retail-selling three-row model in segment year-to-date2. What’s more, MDX is on track for its seventh straight year of 50,000 sales, something no other three-row luxury SUV in segment has ever achieved3.

For 2019, the MDX boasts upgraded interior fitment, new available premium exterior colors, drivability and dynamic enhancements, as well as a new A-Spec sport appearance package. The lineup is further strengthened with the 2019 MDX Sport Hybrid featuring Acura’s supercar derived three-motor Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system, making it the brand’s most powerful and efficient production SUV.

To determine the POVA winner, ALG (part of TrueCar.com) examines 28 mainstream and premium vehicle categories from the 2016 model year, and determines which vehicles will have the lowest depreciation during the period from 2018 to 2021. Eligibility for an overall brand award in either the Mainstream or Premium category requires a company to have vehicles in at least four unique segments.

Electrified and Enhanced: 2019 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid Hits Showrooms

  • Acura’s Sport Hybrid three-row luxury SUV receives an expanded color palette
  • NSX-derived three-motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD powertrain delivers 321 horsepower and receives 27 MPG combined EPA rating
  • MDX Sport Hybrid gains 31 horsepower and nearly 37 percent higher EPA city fuel economy rating compared to the conventional MDX SH-AWD, while seating up to seven passengers

The 2019 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid begins arriving at Acura dealerships nationwide tomorrow featuring four new exterior color options and new interior wood treatment. The 2019 MDX Sport Hybrid will open with a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP1) of $52,800 (excluding $995 destination and handling). This price reflects only a modest price premium of $1,500 over the conventionally powered MDX SH-AWD® with Technology Package despite offering standard adaptive dampers and an additional 31 horsepower while also receiving a nearly 37-percent higher city fuel economy rating.2

Similar in design to the NSX supercar, the MDX Sport Hybrid’s powertrain features Acura’s signature three-motor Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system, making it the brand’s most powerful and efficient production SUV. The Acura MDX lineup continues to lead the industry as the best-selling three-row luxury SUV both of this year and of all-time.3

Similar to the conventional MDX, the 2019 MDX Sport Hybrid features a number of enhancements, including driver and front-passenger 4-way power lumbar support (up from 2-way), authentic Desert Olive Ash wood highlights, high-contrast seat and door panel stitching, and matching wood center console trim for Advance Package models.

Technology and Advance grades include unique interior trim, exterior badging and stainless steel sport pedals. Technology Package models include seating for seven, while the range-topping Advance Package incorporates a 6-passenger interior configuration with second-row captain’s chairs and a large second-row center console in place of a three-occupant bench seat.

For 2019, the exterior color palette has been expanded to eight options, including new Gunmetal Metallic and three new premium colors: Majestic Black Pearl, Performance Red Pearl and Canyon Bronze Metallic.

NSX-Derived Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®)
Engineered for customers who desire the ultimate in driving refinement, technological sophistication and prestige, the MDX Sport Hybrid’s 3.0-liter, i-VTEC™ V6 engine and three-motor Sport Hybrid Super Handling-All Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system delivers decisive power and control as well as instant torque. Despite turning out 321-peak horsepower and 289 lb.-ft. total peak torque, all MDX Sport Hybrids receive an impressive EPA combined fuel economy rating of 27 mpg2.

An advanced 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT) is standard – a feature closely related to the NSX supercar’s 9-speed DCT. Unlike a conventional automatic transmission, MDX Sport Hybrid’s DCT offers ultra-fast gear changes and operates without the need for a torque converter, significantly improving efficiency. The 7DCT can operate automatically or manually via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The MDX Sport Hybrid’s electric SH-AWD® system operates independently of the gasoline engine, as the two rear-mounted electric motors dynamically apportion torque directly to the rear wheels. When cornering, the MDX Sport Hybrid delivers positive torque to the outside rear wheel, much like mechanical SH-AWD®, to create a yaw moment. In addition, the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® can simultaneously apply regenerative brake torque to the inside rear wheel during cornering to further enhance cornering control.

Key Features

  • Three-motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® powertrain
  • 3.0-liter, i-VTEC V6 engine
  • 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT)
  • 4-mode Integrated Dynamics System with SPORT+ mode
  • Active Damper System (ADS)
  • Electric Servo Brake System
  • Body-color lower side sills and front/rear skid garnishes
  • SH-AWD badge on rear and Hybrid badges on front fenders

Every 2019 MDX includes the AcuraWatch™ suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies as standard equipment. AcuraWatch™ bundles together Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC with Low-Speed Follow) and Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW). Additional safety and driver assistive features consist of Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control, Blind Spot Information (BSI), Rear Cross Traffic Monitor and Acura’s Advance Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure.

Along with every other version of MDX, the 2019 MDX Sport Hybrid is manufactured exclusively at Honda’s East Liberty Auto plant located in East Liberty, Ohio using domestic and globally sourced parts.

‘Performance Like Wow’: 2017 Acura MDX Ad Campaign Features Beck’s ‘Wow’

  • Integrated marketing campaign introduces the restyled and refreshed 2017 Acura MDX luxury SUV
  • New TV spots including “Anthem,” (http://acura.us/MDXAnthem) set to the soundtrack of Beck‘s high-energy summer smash, “Wow”
  • TV and digital executions showcase AcuraWatch™ suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies, now standard on all 2017 MDX models
  • Multichannel campaign features custom-tailored digital marketing approach tied to customer purchase motivations

mdx_wow

Acura is introducing its 2017 MDX flagship luxury sport utility vehicle through an integrated marketing campaign launching today, highlighting the vehicle’s bold exterior design and premium features, including the new “Anthem” spot:http://acura.us/MDXAnthem, set to Beck’s kaleidoscopic psych-hip hop anthem, “Wow.” The campaign tells multiple stories of how the new MDX is “Designed to Wow” and will feature numerous consumer touch points with a focus on high-profile video, custom digital and targeted TV advertising.

“The new Acura MDX is a true performance SUV, and this campaign speaks to the ‘Wow’ factor that drivers will experience when they get behind the wheel,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura.

MDX TV Spots
The 2017 MDX marketing campaign features a content-rich campaign with multiple executions, including three new high-impact TV spots that tout the premium, 7-passenger SUV’s youthful confidence, high-level performance, and upgraded safety and technology features.

“Anthem” is all about energy, set to Beck’s latest surrealist smash, “Wow,” highlighting the MDX’s outstanding handling in almost any driving conditions, its performance capabilities and bold new design. The music-driven spot expresses Acura’s Precision Crafted Performance brand direction through the use of vivid colors, and generates excitement and enthusiasm through high-energy music.

The “Focus” spot (http://acura.us/MDXFocus) incorporates one of the MDX’s most important standard safety features – AcuraWatch™ – into the film with a moving representation of the benefits of the SUV’s Collision Mitigation Braking SystemÔ  in an everyday driving scenario involving a father and son. The new MDX features the AcuraWatch™ suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies as standard equipment on all grades.

In “Wake” (http://acura.us/MDXWake), the 2017 Acura MDX is driven through the California desert to show the SUV’s power and precise handling. And after a day spent kicking up the sand, the MDX gets cleaned-up in a way that’s as epic as the driving in the spot —a plane swoops in and drops water on the SUV while it speeds down a highway for a high-performance wash that leaves the MDX showcasing its glistening, upgraded exterior.

The MDX Gets Personal
Debuting with the 2017 Acura MDX campaign, the brand has evolved its digital targeting approach, delivering custom-tailored communication to specific audiences based on their primary car purchase motivations. For example, young affluent families that value seating and safety above other purchase motivators, will sequentially receive MDX information specific to those drivers. This targeted approach will also extend to social efforts surrounding the MDX. Acura will reach key customer segments utilizing Facebook’s newest and most immersive ad unit – the Canvas unit. Instagram also will be used to deliver targeted photo and video content, which will be specifically edited and optimized for the platform. The same customer segments will extend to Addressable TV, allowing Acura to deliver another level of targeted messaging on a household-by-household level.

To launch the 2017 Acura MDX, a premium video campaign including “Anthem,” “Wake” and “Focus” will air throughout September and October. The new MDX advertising will be seen on network primetime programming on NBC, built atop of a foundation of cable, late night and online video executions. To round out this high-profile video support, MDX spots will be featured on CBS NFL games for the majority of the season. In addition to general market support, the launch also will include Hispanic ads airing in select markets.

The 2017 Acura MDX
The 2017 Acura MDX raises its game with bold new exterior styling, larger wheel and tire options and an expanded complement of premium features and technologies, including AcuraWatch™, which makes MDX the first luxury SUV to offer a comprehensive suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies standard equipment (www.acura.com/mdx/features – AcuraWatch).

The new MDX, America’s all-time best-selling three-row luxury SUV, reflects the new Acura design direction including the adoption of Acura’s bold and distinctive new diamond pentagon grille. It also features a more sculpted hood, front fascia, front fenders and revised Jewel Eye™ headlights, the result is a more “executive athletic” appearance for Acura’s class-leading luxury SUV. Additional styling updates include new chrome rocker panel trim, a revised rear bumper and skid garnish, and the return of visible dual exhausts with bright finishers.

Acura is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2016, marking a major milestone since launching in America on March 27, 1986, as the first Japanese luxury automotive brand. The brand debuted with the Acura Legend Sedan and Integra Coupe and 5-door under the tagline “Precision Crafted Automobiles.”  The tagline evolved into “Precision Crafted Performance” with the 1990 introduction of the first generation Acura NSX.

Powertrain
The 2017 Acura MDX leads its class with its combination of power and fuel efficiency. Power comes from an advanced 3.5-liter direct-injected i-VTEC™ V-6 engine rated at 290 peak horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. peak torque (both SAE net). It incorporates a range of advanced friction-reducing technologies that help boost fuel efficiency and power output, and features a crossflow magnesium intake manifold, special “tumble” type intake ports, special piston-crown shapes, and an 11.5:1 compression ratio.

Acura’s i-VTEC™ (intelligent Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) for the intake valves is combined with Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM™) to widen the power band and maximize fuel efficiency. During startup, aggressive acceleration or when climbing hills, VCM operates the engine on all six cylinders. During moderate speed cruising and at low or moderate engine loads, the system operates just the front cylinder bank.

The 2017 MDX with front-wheel drive is rated at 20 mpg city/27 highway/23 combined (with Idle Stop). The 2017 MDX with Super Handling All-Wheel Drive is rated at 19 mpg city/26 highway/22 combined (with Idle Stop). The MDX also meets the stringent ULEV-125 California Air Resources Board (CARB) and EPA Tier 3/BIN 125 emissions standards.

Joining the efficient front wheel drive and Acura’s acclaimed Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™) system is a Sequential SportShift 9-speed automatic transmission with racing-inspired shift paddles, standard with both drive systems.

Body
Advanced material grades, including hot-stamped, high-strength steel and magnesium, give the MDX’s body superb torsion rigidity, the foundation for its confident handling, refined ride quality, and low cabin noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). The hood and front fenders are made from lightweight aluminum, improving both handling and fuel efficiency.

Acura’s next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) front frame structure helps the MDX target top crash-test ratings in frontal collisions. Crash safety performance is further enhanced by the MDX’s one-piece hot-stamped steel door stiffener ring (comprising the A-pillar and B-pillar, roof rail and lower frame member), which helps manage collision energy in frontal offset, side impacts, and roof load management in the event of a rollover.

Chassis
Together with the rigid unibody structure, the MDX’s 4-wheel independent suspension, Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS), Agile Handling Assist, Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA™) and 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS ensure athletic handling, a comfortable and quiet ride, and a high level of active safety performance.

Finely calibrated suspension geometry and bushings combined with the MDX’s special Amplitude Reactive Dampers help provide optimize ride and handling. In addition, the Electric Power Steering tuning eases low-speed steering effort and offers solid high-speed steering feel, making the MDX easy to drive while also promoting a high degree of driver confidence.

Safety and Driver-Assistive Technology
For 2017, every MDX model and trim level includes the AcuraWatch suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technology, including Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow (LSF) and Road Departure Mitigation (RDM).

Using millimeter wave radar and a monocular camera to detect other vehicles as well as lane markings, AcuraWatch can help intervene to prevent or mitigate the severity of a collision. Supported by Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow and Lane Keeping Assist, AcuraWatch can also significantly decrease the driver’s workload during freeway cruising.

All 2017 MDX models feature new Auto High Beam headlights, a new Electric Parking Brake (EPB) with Automatic Brake Hold. The MDX with Advance Package also features a new Surround-View Camera System with six selectable viewing angles.

The 2017 MDX earned a five-star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and is anticipated to receive a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
