Honda today announced the arrival of the 2017 Honda Clarity Electric sedan at select dealerships in California and Oregon. With a competitive introductory lease price of $269 (plus tax) a month for 36 months, the lease terms include an attractive allowance of 20,000 miles per year and 24/7 roadside assistance. The lease, which reflects a federal tax credit built in, requires $1,730 down plus the first month’s lease payment due at signing (not including tax, registration or official fees).1 In addition, if they apply, California and Oregon customers may qualify for their state’s rebates of $2,500 once they become available.2

The Clarity Electric sedan is powered by a 161-horsepower (120-kilowatt) electric motor producing 221 lb.-ft. of torque and drawing power from a 25.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The vehicle can be fully charged in just over three hours at 240 volts and when using DC fast charging with the SAE Combined Charging System, it can achieve an 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes. The Clarity Electric has an EPA fuel economy rating of 126/103/114 MPGe (city/highway/combined)3 and an EPA range rating of 89 miles on a full charge.3

The Clarity Electric is part of Honda’s Clarity series, which includes the Clarity Fuel Cell, launched in December 2016, and the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, launching nationally later this year. Clarity is the first ever vehicle series offering customers an array of electrified powertrain choices in one sophisticated, spacious and comprehensively equipped five-passenger sedan. The Clarity series is part of the Honda Electrification Initiative that sees Honda expand the number and types of electrified vehicles in its product lineup. This initiative also includes a new dedicated hybrid car launching next year and the expanded application of Honda’s two-motor hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains to multiple car and light truck models in the future. This initiative contributes to Honda’s intention to have two-thirds of its global automobile sales come from electrified vehicles by 2030.

The 2017 Honda Clarity Electric sedan is geared toward consumers who desire a spacious, comfortable and affordable sedan that suits their daily driving needs. It is offered in a premium Touring trim and is the only affordable 5-passenger EV sedan with all the technology features, safety features and premium features that consumers expect today.

Honda and Acura Trucks Combine for New June Record; New Performance Products Energize Both Brands

  • American Honda trucks set new all-time June record, up almost 2%
  • Acura Division gains 23.7% in June with both cars & trucks rising in double digits
  • Acura TLX nets 12.9% increase as 2018 A-Spec performance model drives traffic
  • Acura RDX sets new June mark with 48.3% jump; MDX nets 14% increase
  • Honda HR-V sets all-time best June, advancing over 35%
  • Accord rises 3.4% and Civic tops 30,000 units as passenger cars remain strong

2017_Honda_CR_V_014

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported total June sales of 139,793 Honda and Acura vehicles, an increase of 0.8 percent over June 2016. Honda and Acura Division trucks also combined for a new June record, gaining 1.9 percent on sales of 70,067 units, while combined car sales totaled 69,726, down a very slight 0.3 percent. Honda Division was down 1.3 percent on sales of 125,755 units, with trucks down 1.6 percent on sales of 60,500 units due to inventory issues, and cars down just 1 percent on sales of 65,255. Acura Division sales gained 23.7 percent in June, on sales of 14,038 vehicles, with trucks jumping 30.9 percent on sales of 9,567, and cars rising 10.6 percent on sales of 4,471 units.

Honda
Honda Division maintained a robust sales pace in June, nearly matching a notably strong June of 2016. Civic and Accord remain at the top of car sales charts, with Accord rising 3.4 percent in June and Civic again posting a strong month of over 30,000 units, boosted by the high performance halo of Type R.  CR-V suffered slightly in June from low supply of higher trim availability, but HR-V set yet another record with its best June ever and Ridgeline gained in double digits, despite inventory issues with all-wheel drive models.

  • Continuing to assert its lead in the subcompact SUV segment, HR-V jumped 35.1 percent in June, with 8,872 units sold.
  • Accord pushed against the tide again in June, gaining 3.4 percent on sales of 29,791 vehicles, building momentum for the fall debut of the just-announced 2018 Accord.
  • With 30,909 Civics sold in June, the #1 selling car in the U.S. combined with #2 Accord to exceed 60,000 units for the month, the top 1-2 passenger car duo in the industry.
  • Civic Type R proved popular in its first month, with sales topping 550 units in 2 weeks.
  • Odyssey got off to a strong start, with sales of 11,146 units making it #1 in segment.

“Against a sea of competitors clinging to market share via heavy incentives and fleet sales, Honda’s success is driven by retail customers attracted to a cadence of strong new products,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. “Although the market is catching its breath, we’re injecting new energy with models like the incredible new Civic Type R and we’re not done yet in 2017, with a new Accord on the way.”

Acura
Acura had a notably strong month of June driven by renewed focus on product that reflects the brand’s Precision Crafted Performance direction. Notably, the recently revitalized TLX and new MDX Sport Hybrid earned considerable positive attention, helping boost the division 23.7 percent for the month.  TLX led Acura car sales with a 10.6 percent increase in June, while RDX led Acura trucks to a 30.9 percent gain.

  • The new TLX A-Spec is a sought-after model at Acura dealers, helping overall TLX sales gain 12.9 percent on sales of 3,175 units for the month.
  • RDX set a new all-time June record with a 48.3 percent leap on sales of 5,327 units.
  • MDX had a strong June, posting 4,210 sales for an increase of 14 percent.
  • ILX sales rose 6.9 percent on sales of 1,191 units, its best month of 2017.
  • Adding emphasis to Acura’s performance path, one of Michael Shank Racing’s NSX GT3 cars won at Watkins Glen on Sunday, its second consecutive victory in the IMSA series.

“In a challenging luxury automotive marketplace, reshaping our products around the performance direction of the Acura brand is clearly resonating with luxury car and truck buyers,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president & general manager of the Acura division. “The A-Spec variant has put TLX back on the luxury performance sedan map, while the sporty virtues of MDX and RDX continue to speak for themselves in strong sales.”

2017 Honda Civic Type R – Overview

The all-new 2017 Civic Type R is the fastest, most powerful Honda and the first-ever Honda Type R model to be sold in America. Globally, it is the fifth generation of the legendary Civic Type R, whose history dates to its 1997 launch as a hatchback model in Japan (see history below).

The move to one global platform for all models in the 10th-generation Civic lineup paved the way for the introduction of the Civic Type R on American soil – the final chapter in the most comprehensive and ambitious remake of the Civic in its storied, 44-year history. The Civic Type R joins the Civic Sedan – 2016 North American Car of the Year – the Civic Coupe, Civic Hatchback and Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan in rounding out the 10th-generation Civic lineup.

The all-new Civic Type R is the second generation of Type R to feature turbocharged power and shares significant elements of its engine design with the 9th-generation Civic Type R sold overseas.  Its 306-horsepower 2.0-liter DOHC direct-injected i-VTEC® turbo powerplant, manufactured exclusively by Honda of America Mfg., Inc. in Anna, Ohio, using domestic and globally sourced parts, is the most powerful production Honda automobile engine made in America (surpassed only by the Acura NSX twin turbocharged 90-degree V6, also made in Anna). The vehicle is manufactured exclusively in Honda’s Swindon, UK plant alongside the standard hatchback model on which it is based.

The ultimate in Civic performance and a direct manifestation of Honda’s racing spirit, experience and heritage, the Type R stands as a banner of Honda’s commitment to creating products that enliven the senses and stir the soul. Moreover, the new Civic Type R has claimed the title as the fastest front-wheel-drive production car in the world, based on setting a record lap time of 7 minutes 43.80 seconds on Germany’s 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife (north loop) on April 7, 2017.

This new Type R also benefits from the fundamental redesign of the 10th-generation Civic body and chassis, which set its sights on luxury-class European C-segment cars with respect to steering, handling, ride quality and high-speed stability. Improvements to the breed include a 38 percent more rigid body, a new multi-link rear suspension, improved aerodynamics for the best balance of aerodynamic drag and lift, and a sports chassis fine-tuned on the circuits of Suzuka, Takasu and Nürburgring. The result is the ultimate in Civic performance, the very best that Honda can produce in a front-wheel-drive performance car.

First-Ever Civic Type R for America On Sale

  • 306-horsepower Civic Type R is most powerful production Honda ever sold in the U.S.
  • World’s fastest production front-wheel-drive car at the Nürburgring
  • Civic Type R capstones Honda’s epic 10th generation Civic lineup

2017_Honda_Civic_Type_R

The all-new 2017 Honda Civic Type R – the ultimate performance variant of America’s best-selling car1 and the first-ever Type R-badged Honda sold in the U.S. – goes on sale starting tomorrow in one comprehensively-equipped Touring trim with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)2 of $33,900.

The most powerful production Honda ever sold in America, the track-ready 2017 Civic Type R embodies Honda’s racing spirit, making 306 horsepower (SAE net) at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (SAE net) from 2,500-4500 rpm from its 2.0-liter DOHC direct-injected and turbocharged i-VTEC® engine. A pre-production version of the new Type R claimed the title of world’s fastest production front-wheel-drive (FWD) car on April 7, 2017, setting a record lap time of 7 minutes 43.80 seconds on Germany’s legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife (North Loop), more than three seconds faster than the previous FWD best.

The Type R puts the power down through a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission with helical limited slip differential hooked up to 245/30ZR20 Continental SportContact 6 high-performance tires on 20×8.5-inch black-finished aluminum wheels. Speed is scrubbed by 13.8-inch cross-drilled rotors clamped by 4-piston Brembo aluminum calipers in front and 12.0-inch rotors with single-piston calipers in the rear.

The Type R chassis features a dual-axis strut front suspension and multi-link rear, front and rear anti-roll bars, Type-R exclusive springs, bushings and damper mountings and a newly designed Adaptive Damper System with the ability to continuously adjust damping force at all four corners using input from three on-board G sensors, four suspension stroke sensors and a steering angle sensor.

The Adaptive Damper System, along with the dual-pinion variable-ratio electric power steering, drive-by-wire throttle, and brake system, are tied to the Type R’s three selectable driving modes, with COMFORT, SPORT and +R settings, allowing the driver to dial up the Type R’s reflexes depending on the driving environment. The throttle ECU also features driver-selectable automatic rev matching with two profiles, one for COMFORT and SPORT modes and one for +R mode, to assist drivers in making smooth downshifts without the need for heel & toe downshifting.

Additional performance-enhancing Type-R exclusive features include a weight-saving all-aluminum hood (-11.7 lbs.) and the application of structural adhesives to the body for added structural rigidity, as well as a high-flow exhaust system with three center-mounted exhaust outlets, and a comprehensive aerodynamic package that delivers an exceptional balance of high-speed stability and low drag.
